Should Christians Watch Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood?

Updated: Mar 18, 2022

Today we see a generation of movies and entertainment entirely focused on political correctness and woke politics. We have moved past making artistic and creative stories with heart and morality to be stories focused on whatever political agenda is the mainstream at the moment.

That is not the case with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, an animated series based on a comic series of the same name that has persisted for just about forty years at this point. Phantom Blood is Part 1 of the story, and it stands as a period piece, not only in the fictional universe it lives in, but in the time it was created.

Part 1 is an unabashedly masculine show, highlighting in both the protagonist and antagonist what masculinity can appear as. Jonathan Joestar represents virtuous sacrificial masculinity, and Dio Brando represents the aggressively ambitious and immoral masculinity that comes when strength and progression is focused on the inward self and our personal goals.

For a generation lacking masculine influence, this show showcases the good and bad that can come from men's influence. It also keeps a traditional view of love in it's romance between Jonathan and Erina, and I love that the romance, however minor an aspect it is in the show, is focused on everything but the sexual, and keeps things wholesome.

Overall, here's the breakdown:

Great Things About The Show:

  • Traditional View of Masculinity and Romance

  • Classical Hero's Story

  • Enjoyable Magic and Lore

The Problems and Things To Look Out For:

  • Slow Action Scenes

  • Action Can Be Violent and Bloody

  • Zombies and Vampires Are Disturbing At Times
